A focused messaging and design initiative helped Journey to New Life unify its voice, clarify its value and position itself for deeper engagement with key audiences.
Journey to New Life (JTNL) is a Kansas City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals reentering the community after incarceration. JTNL provides wraparound services—housing, employment support, life skills and peer mentorship—rooted in dignity and trust. Facing a shifting landscape in public attitudes and donor priorities, JTNL sought to strengthen its brand identity, clarify its messaging and expand its reach across channels.
JTNL partnered with Crux to evolve its brand communications. The goal: establish a stronger messaging strategy and visual system that reflect JTNL’s mission, enhance awareness and drive engagement with prospective participants, program alumni, donors, volunteers and partners.
Crux began with a comprehensive research process:
From the initial research and discovery phase, Crux gleaned actionable insights and identified key opportunities for JTNL. The Crux team prioritized and mapped these findings into a clear 30/60/90-day roadmap of marketing tactics, ensuring that the most impactful actions were addressed first.
Next, Crux developed JTNL’s messaging framework, drawing from stakeholder interviews and research. This included a refined value proposition for the participant and donor/volunteer audiences; messaging pillars such as “Everyone Deserves a New Beginning” and “Real Change Takes Real Relationships,” a compelling brand narrative, tagline (“Progress is Personal”), elevator pitch and boilerplate – all crafted to unify JTNL’s voice and articulate its mission with clarity and heart.
With messaging in place, Crux moved to visual brand refinement. Rather than a full rebrand, the team refreshed JTNL’s existing logo, explored event-specific logo variations and conducted a color study to ensure the visual identity reflected the organization’s optimistic, mission-driven character. Crux developed comprehensive brand guidelines to maintain consistency across all touchpoints.
Finally, Crux produced a suite of design deliverables to support JTNL’s outreach and engagement efforts. These included:

Crux’s work helped JTNL clarify its positioning and elevate its story. The new messaging pillars— “Everyone Deserves a New Beginning,” “Real Change Takes Real Relationships,” “There’s More Than One Way to Help,” and “When One Person Moves Forward, We All Do”—unified the organization’s voice to inspire both internal and external audiences.
The refreshed logo and cohesive visual identity system gave JTNL a professional, approachable look that stands out in the reentry services landscape. Comprehensive brand guidelines and design templates ensured consistency and flexibility for future campaigns and events.
Website and SEO recommendations improved user experience and search visibility, while a tailored PR and social media strategies will expand JTNL’s reach and engagement. The organization is now positioned as Kansas City’s voice for second chances, leading with bold, human stories and measurable outcomes.
